John Hasson, a 41-year veteran of the Boston Fire Department, has been picked by Mayor Martin J. Walsh to serve as interim fire commissioner, the mayor’s office announced today.

“The Boston Fire Department will be in great hands under the leadership of John Hasson,” Walsh said in a statement. “I’m grateful for his service and his commitment to fulfilling the vision of the Boston Fire Department as we work together to improve the services we provide the City of Boston.”

Hasson has worked as the acting chief for the past six months. He will serve as the commissioner until a permanent selection has been made. The search for a new commissioner will begin this week, the mayor’s office said.
