Challenger to US Rep. John Tierney reports strong fund-raising in first three months of the year

Seth Moulton, a Salem Democrat who aims to challenge US Representative John F. Tierney’s reelection in the September primary, reported a robust fund-raising period of $454,399 in the first three months of the year, his campaign team announced.

The first-time candidate has raised more than $1 million since he entered the race in July.

Moulton’s cash on hand has now climbed to $651,108, his campaign reported.

Tierney, who has represented the Sixth Congressional District Seat for 17 years, had more cash on hand three months ago, at the end of 2013 -- $709,000 However, his campaign did not make his latest fundraising totals available. Congressional candidates must submit quarterly reports to the Federal Election Commission by April 15 but can decide whether or not to release their tallies earlier.

Moulton, a Marine veteran of the Iraq war, outraised Tierney in each of the previous two quarters.

Tierney is being challenged by Moulton and fellow Democrat Marisa DeFranco in the September primary election. Former state senator Richard R. Tisei, who narrowly lost to Tierney in 2012, is running again on the Republican ticket.
