Neighbors along Nahant Avenue, a quiet side street near Dorchester’s Adams Corner, said they are stunned by an early-morning shooting that killed a man in his 40s.

The unidentified male was shot around 1 a.m. yesterday, police said. Neighbors said he was shot in the street.

Nicole Gomes, 26, who lives on the block where the man was shot, said she was awake at the time and going out to her front stoop occasionally for a smoke, but did not hear any shots or signs of disturbance.

Gomes said she was startled when police rushed to the street and asked her and other neighbors if they had heard or seen anything unusual.

“It’s a really nice area,’’ said Gomes. “We were so shocked.’’

The man was shot in the chest, neighbors said.

Neighbors said they believed the victim was a native of Ireland who lived in a three-floor condominium complex on the street. One neighbor said that he was from the Aran Islands and that he had lived here for about 10 years and that he worked in construction.

Around noon yesterday, patrolmen were interviewing residents and putting fliers on windshields urging residents to call the police tip line, 1-800-494-TIPS, if they had any information about the crime.

The man was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors said the shooting followed the annual Irish Heritage Festival, which drew large crowds to Adams Corner earlier in the day.

Richard Dumont, 53, said the man was shot right outside his window.

“I can’t believe this,’’ he said. “It doesn’t fit in this neighborhood at all.’’

Yesterday morning, a construction crew came by the victim’s apartment to pick him up for work, like they do every weekday, Dumont said.

One of the men rang his bell over and over, Dumont said, and then they drove away.
